Can I exchange my US or Canadian driving licence for an Irish one?
Not if it is American. The United States is not a recognised exchange country, so a US licence cannot be swapped for an Irish one. You may drive on it as a visitor for up to twelve months, but once you take up normal residence in Ireland it no longer covers you, and the route is the learner's route: theory test, learner permit, Essential Driver Training and the driving test. The one concession is real: holders of a full foreign licence for at least two years can apply for Reduced EDT, six sessions instead of twelve, with no six month wait before the test. Canada is different: licences from Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario and Saskatchewan exchange directly.
