A small village with an outsized past: an early monastic centre and the capital of the Kingdom of Leinster under Diarmait Mac Murchada. Ferns stands in County Wexford, with a 13th-century castle at its heart.
The ruins of a 13th-century castle stand at the heart of Ferns, with one substantial tower surviving. A visitor centre in the castle explains the site and the story of the MacMurrough kings.
Ferns' Church of Ireland cathedral stands on the site of the early monastery of St Aidan (Edan), with carved high cross fragments in its grounds. The present building incorporates work from several centuries.
The ruined Augustinian abbey church in Ferns was founded in the 12th century under Diarmait Mac Murchada. Its tower and walls stand in a graveyard close to the castle.
The castle, cathedral and abbey all lie within a short walk in this small village. Together they show how much history is packed into Ferns' few streets.
Ferns was an early monastic centre founded by St Aidan, also known as St Edan, in the early medieval period.
Ferns became the capital of the Kingdom of Leinster, and its most famous king was Diarmait Mac Murchada.
Mac Murchada's appeal for outside military help in the 1160s led to the Norman arrival in Ireland in 1169, changing Irish history.
In tradition, Mac Murchada is said to be buried at Ferns, near the abbey he founded.
